DayOneNotDayTwo: “Making Journalism Education Accountable to Communities”

It’s tempting to label lack of confidence in journalism a primarily conservative issue. Yet due to the industry’s history, many communities feel unsure that journalists understand them — or even want to. Andrea Wenzel, associate professor of journalism at Temple University, and Andre Simms, founder and co-director of the nonprofit DayOneNotDayTwo, “collaborated to co-lead a solutions journalism course at Temple where a paid cohort of North Philadelphia resident fellows studied and reported alongside Temple undergraduate students.” They discussed what they learned from this effort and how to model a media ecosystem that answers to (or, perhaps, is run by) the communities it covers.
