Nominations for the prestigious annual Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal and the Sabin Rising Star Award are now open. These annual awards from the Sabin Vaccine Institute recognize those who have made extraordinary contributions in the field of vaccinology or a complementary field such as infectious disease or public health.
The Sabin Gold Medal commemorates the legacy of Dr. Albert B. Sabin, who developed the oral live virus (polio vaccine that is widely heralded with making a huge contribution to the near eradication of polio worldwide). It honors extraordinary public health leaders who save lives through the development and use of vaccines.
The Rising Star Award, first presented in 2020, celebrates an early-career researcher whose work shows tremendous promise to advance immunization for the next generation.

The Sabin Gold Medal is the highest scientific award given by the Sabin Vaccine Institute, and the recipients of the award are among the most accomplished and respected in their fields. Past recipients of the Gold Medal have developed and contributed research to vaccines for polio, measles, mumps, rubella, Marek’s disease, hepatitis A and B, adenoviruses, meningitis, typhoid, pertussis, anthrax, rabies, varicella, malaria, cholera, Hib, rotavirus, HPV, pneumonia, and COVID-19.
This is the 30th year that the Sabin Vaccine Institute has bestowed the Gold Medal Award. Past recipients include Dr. Paul Offit, Kathrin Jansen, PhD, Dr. Carol Baker, Dr. Roger Glass, and Dr. Ciro de Quadros, who later served as Sabin’s executive vice president.
