Meet Chompy the Robot – Easton Courier

BArlow RobAutics Team FRC 4572 has had a successful season competing with its new robot, Chompy. The Joel Barlow High School team took third and fifth place in competitions this year with one more contest to go before the summer.

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a global organization that encourages high school students to compete in the “ultimate sport for the mind.” The acronym FIRST means “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.”

After Chompy is done competing, he will make his debut in the community to show off his autonomous piloting capabilities and accuracy in hitting targets.

Eighth- through tenth-grade students can meet him during BArlow RobAutics’ annual week-long summer camp from June 24 to 28, hosted by the high school. Then on June 29, Chompy will be at the Easton Public Library from 1 to 2 p.m. to show the community what he can do. All ages are welcome. Chompy’s appearance is part of the library’s STEAM (science, technology, art, and math) activity program each month.

“We are pleased with Chompy’s new vision system, which enables it it to automatically aim at targets, ” said Emma Ploss, one of the team’s co captions.

Chompy features approximately 100 yards of wiring (the length of a football field). It took more than 200 hours to build him with 50 to 60 of those being spent machining his frame and parts, said Alexander Weiss.

Chompy took the place of Mantis, the robot the team built last year. Chompy has an elevator shooter that pivots on two separate axes, making it extremely effective at hitting targets at any level needed for competition. It is incredibly durable with a strong steel frame and is capable of nearly self piloting.
