A Message From First Selectman Bindelglass – Easton Courier

This year’s Memorial Day parade is scheduled for Monday, May 27. Participants should arrive at the Easton Fire Department at 9 a.m. Step off will be at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Following the parade there will be a ceremony at Easton Town Hall honoring those who gave their lives defending our freedoms. The ceremony will include a salute to our veterans, a flag raising and a rifle salute. After the ceremony, short remembrances will be held at the Easton cemeteries. For more information, contact Don Rogerson, Post Commander at 203-209-1402. If you are newer to town, this is one of our signature events. Sports teams and other groups participate and people line Center road to watch. We hope to see you there.

Join Easton Pride for the 5th Annual Flag Raising at 1 p.m. on June 1 at Easton Town Hall. There will be a variety of games, arts and crafts, story time, ice cream, and a movie screening at the Easton Library.

SAVE THE DATE: Accepting donations of home grown produce or purchased items from Easton farms to assist Easton’s homebound seniors. Drop-off site is Shaggy Coos Farm, 53 Center Road on Tuesdays ONLY beginning July 8 from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For more information contact, Daniel Simonelli at 203-268-1137.

In the senior center newsletter our seniors will be receiving a short pamphlet entitled,” Every Family’s Home Safety Guide” prepared by the Easton Volunteer Fire Department and the Fire Marshal’s office. We have made an online version available at:  https://www.eastonct.gov/emergency-info.

Recently there has been an increase in complaints from neighbors about the appearance of adjacent properties. Sometimes this includes loud activities or poor maintenance, or storage of excessive numbers of unsightly equipment. The town does have a nuisance ordinance which can be found at: https://ecode360.com/27043885#27043885. You will see that there are provisions for enforcement, but they are difficult to actually enforce if people are set on disobeying. The town has taken folks to court and eventually has been successful, but that is of course a lengthy process. The town is also authorized to do certain work itself, but this can be costly with the money being hard to recoup.  It is my hope that neighbors will cooperate and figure out ways to make the effort to keep neighborhoods nice for everybody, but please feel free to reach out to me for help.

Work began this week on the tennis courts at Helen Keller Middle School. We are using grants obtained from the state to resurface these well-worn courts and to make them usable for both tennis and pickleball. We hope to keep any interference with use of the adjacent playground to a minimum, and finish the work within 90 days.

On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. please join the Historical Society of Easton in support of the volunteer efforts of the Union Cemetery Association.  Michael Carroll from Rediscovering History returns to Easton to continue his work restoring some of the neglected and damaged monuments within our town’s most famous burial ground.

Have a great weekend,

Dave
