Easton’s Second Mailbox Is On the Way – Easton Courier

Selectman Nicholas D’Addario has made it his mission to secure a second United States Postal Service mailbox in town.

There is only one mailbox for the entire town, and it’s in front of the Post Office. The location has caused difficulties for some residents, specifically seniors, in using it.

“There is a coffee shop there, and only two parking spots for people dropping off their mail,” said D’Addario.

D’Addario wants residents to have easy access to a mailbox, and that can only be accomplished with a second mailbox located at a more easily accessible location.

So he reached out to U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, who represents Easton, to see how the town can go about getting a second mailbox. Mailboxes are federal property.

A spokesperson for Himes said the USPS approved a second mailbox for Easton in June after Himes’ office put in the request. But its delivery has been delayed.  She couldn’t give a definitive date when the mailbox would arrive, only that it will be delivered to Easton.

Once it arrives D’Addario thinks the library or Town Hall is a good spot for it.

“The library makes a lot of sense,” he said. “People come in all the time. driving up and dropping off their books.”

Val Buckley, Easton Senior Center director, said adding a second mailbox is a good idea because when you put your paid bills in your own mailbox, you run the risk of someone stealing your mail.

“I always have to bring my mail to the Post Office,” she said.

Buckley, however, thinks that there is no need for a second mailbox in close vicinity to the Post Office. She feels that if the town gets another one, it should be somewhere across town. such as the end of Helen Keller Middle School’s driveway.

“This way people farther away from the Post Office will have one closer to them, and the two mailboxes aren’t right next to each other,” she said.

D’Addario said he’s grateful First Selectman David Bindelglass approved his effort and hopes the second mailbox will enhance the quality of life for residents.

“I have heard people discussing this in passing,” he said. “I said this is something we should work on if we can.”
